5 Minutes With… Josh Fletcher of HelloFitt

Josh Fletcher - HelloFitt. BDmag five minutes with, April 2024

After deciding to pursue a career he was passionate about, Josh Fletcher left the legal industry and created HelloFitt, a single membership that opens the door for members to access to its network of health, fitness and wellness facilities.

Tell us about yourself and HelloFitt.

HelloFitt was an idea born out of frustration. I have always been an active person, but was frustrated at wanting to indulge in different health and fitness activities while earning a uni students wage. Membership prices quickly add up and casual visits were not an option with a part time job. After I finished my uni degree I worked in the legal industry for a few years before deciding it was time to lean into something I was passionate about, which is when HelloFitt was born.

At is core, HelloFitt is a single membership that opens the door for members to access to our network of health, fitness and wellness facilities. Your membership covers access to things like gyms, fitness studios, yoga, pools, golf, recovery centres and jiu-jitsu to name a few. Once a member signs up they get access to our app. From there, they can browse facilities near them, plan what they feel like doing that day or week and book from their phone.

We have created an expansive network of facilities in Townsville which includes the cities best 24-hour gyms and fitness studios. The real point of difference is variety – being able to use your gym membership to have a pamper day at the recovery lab or spend an afternoon at the driving range without having to pay causal visits or multiple memberships.

In addition to access to our network of providers, members can take advantage of a host of members benefits. We have partnered with local businesses to offer our members discounts on allied health, which includes physio, chiro and remedial massage. As well as discounts on supplements and activewear.

We also offer an employee benefit program with corporate pricing. Health and fitness benefits are the most requested employee benefit in Australia.

It is very fulfilling to know we have created a service that makes holistic health and wellness more accessible by eliminating some of the financial barriers that prevents people from engaging in all of the activities they enjoy.

What has been the most challenging aspect of starting/owning HelloFitt?

The most challenging aspects of launching HelloFitt were logistical. There was a great deal of time spent searching for companies that could provide or develop the software and functionality I required from the app. Once this was figured out I began my crash course in marketing.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

Fun fact: I like to remind my friends at the ripe age over 4 I won $50 in the mutton busters (sheep riding) at the Tambo Rodeo.

Less fun fact: Before starting HelloFitt I was a lawyer. I have been lucky enough to use rugby union as a vehicle to see amazing parts of Australia and world. I have done tours to New Zealand, England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. I also spent 6 months playing rugby in an Irish winter.

What is the best piece of career or business advice you have ever received?

When you set expectations you sign a contract for disappointment. Goal setting in important to quantify short and longterm progress, but it is not helpful to attach an expectation to those goals.

I have learnt a lot from my mum, who is my biggest motivator and the most resilient person I have ever met. It’s not advice but more of observation. If you’re willing to do an unreasonable amount of work for an unreasonable amount of time there is a very good chance you will make it work.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for HelloFitt?

The next step for HelloFitt is to expand our network of partners along the east coast and into regional areas. We have recently partnered with our first gym in Mt Isa, which is an attractive option for anyone that is FIFO between the two cities.
