Remember when you first started your business? 

All your files were neat and tidy. You had a handful of apps with everything you needed. It was easy to find what you needed and you knew exactly where to put what.  Your processes were short and simple and easy.

But then… things changed.

More tools and apps were tried, tested and applied to help run your business. You downloaded soooo many resources and courses. Team members came and went. You tried a bunch of different things and your process adapted and changed as your business grew.

And well… Things got busy. 

And then they got kinda cluttered and chaotic.

It happens to the best of us. Entropy is a thing. 

But if you’re anything like me, it makes you crazy when you can’t find what you need quickly or do what you need to do efficiently.

I mean, who wants to waste time searching for that one thing you need to do your job today?? Not me!

How to do a digital declutter

The first step in a digital cleanup is to identify areas of your digital workspace that need to be decluttered.

This may be a little different for everyone, depending on the kind of business you run and how you work. But there are some core areas pretty much everyone will need to address.

These include (at a minimum):

  • Digital inbox
  • File storage/s
  • Marketing app/s
  • Project management app/s
  • CRM
  • Social media
  • Digital desktop

Of course, there may be more that needs to be addressed. But this list will get you started on the most common problem areas.

Once you’ve identified the areas that need attention, you can create a simple schedule to work through them a little at a time or all at once – whichever fits your style and schedule.

I won’t lie. Depending on how much clutter you have to work through, this project may be a bit tedious. You’ll be tempted to put it aside to work on more interesting things.

But trust me – it’s worth your effort. So push through the resistance and keep at it until you are done. Because once you get your virtual office whipped into shape, you’ll be so glad you made it happen.

The truth is, digital clutter builds up in our lives in both the physical and digital spaces. It not only clutters the physical space around us but also clutters our minds with thoughts about what needs to be done or not yet completed. Which slows us down, creates obstacles, and frankly, just makes us tired.

Tackling a digital declutter may feel overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. When you break it down into simple, manageable steps and just keep knocking items off the list until you finish – it’s totally achievable without taking over your life.
