Industry bodies convened this morning at the Townsville RSL for the State Development Industry Breakfast, seeking insight from key decision makers into the future of local and regional projects.
Throughout the morning, a series of esteemed speakers took the stage to shed light on industry best practices, strategic initiatives and regional supply chain opportunities.
First to speak was David Mitchell, Executive Director of TropIQ, who shared their plans for the Townsville Tropical Intelligence and Health Precinct, noting over $1 billion worth of development opportunities spanning private, defence, educational and residential sectors.
Another significant project in the spotlight was Garwara Baya, the renewable energy project in the Upper Burdekin, presented by John Burke, General Manager of Construction at Windlab. With the capacity to generate clean power while eliminating around 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, John spoke about the key role this $1.2 billion project is playing in driving progress against decarbonisation and supporting the critical shortage of renewable energy supply.
The breakfast also featured BMD Groups’ Project Manager Dan Hussey, who shed light on the highly anticipated Haughton Pipeline Project Stage 2. Designed to extend the duplication from the Haughton Channel through 30kms of bushland to the Burdekin River, the project is set to create 300 local jobs. Dan noted that BMD was presently in the procurement phase and urged businesses to contemplate how they could get involved.
Additionally, the Townsville Airport Draft Master Plan was a focal point, with Liam Campbell, Senior Planner with Queensland Airports flying up from the Gold Coast to speak on behalf of Brendan Cook, Regional General Manager of Queensland Airports. Liam highlighted the significant investment in infrastructure projects outlined in the Townsville Airport Draft Master Plan, which includes plans for new full-contact and remote aircraft bays, expanded aprons, extended runways, and enhanced taxi ways to ensure the airport remains a key regional transport hub.
The breakfast provided regional businesses with a clear path to actively participate and engage in key projects that are set to shape the region’s future, and ultimately the community at-large.
