As far as bucket list items go, I know attending a live taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as a VIP guest is going to be hard to top.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
You might remember the guest speaker I mentioned a few blogs back by the name of Camille Edwards, who is an Executive Assistant at The Late Show? Well, this week she arranged for us to attend a live taping of the show on Thursday night, where we saw actor Jeremy Strong (from the HBO series Succession) be interviewed alongside Ed Sheeran (no introduction needed) who performed live. Afterwards, we got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go onto the set and see firsthand where all the magic happens!
Hello Sports Journalism
This week we dived head-first into the Sports section, spending the week writing and discussing everything BUT “who won the game.” Instead, we’ve been focusing heavily on current hot topics surrounding contracts, scandals, rivalries and sneaker wars. As part of this, we toured the New York Nike store (which is five floors) and the Major League Baseball (MLB) store, looking at the integral role of branding and marketing within the sporting industry.
We also had Senior Sports Correspondent from Sports Illustrated, Sean Gregory, come in as our guest speaker, where he discussed his career and the future of sports journalism. We finished off the academic week with a tour of Madison Square Garden on Friday (which certainly gave Queensland Country Bank Stadium a run for its money). Not only did we tour the inside of the stadium, but went behind the scenes to see where they store the beer (they have five beer rooms) and also their hallway of fame, which is plastered with photographs of celebrities who have graced the stadium with their presence – from Marilyn Monroe to The Beatles.
Broadway, Lady Liberty and New Jersey
On Thursday night, we saw the show-stopping Moulin Rouge on Broadway, which was absolutely spectacular, before spending Saturday at Liberty Island becoming acquainted with Lady Liberty. On Sunday, Luna and I took a trip to New Jersey and explored the incredibly beautiful and suburban area of Montclair where I felt as though I’d stepped into the set of a movie. It was certainly a lovely way to end a busy week, which, in case you couldn’t tell, has been one of my favourites so far in New York City!
