Chew for Charity

10,000 Donuts to be sold in a single day for charity.

Locals are invited to buy a donut and ‘chew for charity’ this Sunday to raise $20,000 for Community Gro’s Upper Ross community pantry.

“Our aim is to make and sell 10,000 donuts in a day, a feat which has never been done by a Queensland owned company before,” says Galactic Donuts founder, Tom Potter.

Tom, who is the legendary founder of the Eagle Boys pizza franchise, has gone on to open Galactic Donuts stores in Rockhampton and Brisbane since launching the first store in Townsville in March this year, and came up with the ‘Chew for Charity’ concept as a way of giving back to the communities in which they operate.

“As a company, we wanted to create an annual event which enables us to be able to give back to the local communities that support us, and we’re delighted to launch ‘Chew for Charity’ this Sunday in Townsville.

“The entire range of Galactic Donuts will be just $2 each, with every single cent donated to Community Gro.”

Tom, who is based in Brisbane, will join Galactic Donuts Townsville Co-Owner Tessa Tata and the team in working through Saturday night and all day Sunday to achieve the feat of making 10,000 fresh donuts, which will take over one tonne of flour, 500kg of local sugar and up to 500 litres of cream and custard to make.

“We’ve had great support from the local community, with Coates Hire donating the use of their LED road sign to promote the event, Allied Pinnacle donating a tonne of flour, and Triple M and Hit103.1 offering advertising support,” says Ms Tata.

“This will be a fun, community event, with face painting for the kids and plenty of staff and volunteers rostered on to keep the donuts moving out the door. We’ll even have some local personalities serving behind the counter, including our local MP, Aaron Harper.

“It’s an all-in, hands on day, but we have experienced such terrific support since opening our store in Townsville this year, so we think this is the perfect way to support a local charity who can use this donation to make an incredible impact in the community.”

Community Gro operates community centres in Garbutt and the Upper Ross, providing support services where individuals and families can receive support with managing everyday life and build their social connections. Chief Executive Officer Kathrin Meehan said the donation from Galactic Donuts will have a significant impact on the support services they offer.

“Community Gro Upper Ross has a community pantry so we can provide enough food for people to get by until we can link them up with ongoing services,” said Ms Meehan.

“Due to the rise in the cost of living and subsequent homelessness crisis, we’re seeing a huge increase in people who are going without meals because they just can’t afford to buy groceries.

“To receive such a significant donation from Galactic Donuts will provide stability for our community pantry leading up to Christmas to support those who desperately need a hand at this time, so we would love for everyone to get behind Chew for Charity to help achieve the $20,000 goal.”

Galactic Donuts is located on Hervey Range Drive in Kirwan and will be open from 7am on Sunday 11 December until sold out. A collection bin will be available in-store on the day for donations of non-perishable food items for the Community Gro Pantry.
