It’s not the norm to work your ‘side-hustle’ as part of your day job, but that’s exactly what Laine Matthews has done in starting up Sweat Spa, a full spectrum infrared sauna experience, sub-letting a room at Hello Health where she works as a Clinic Manager.
Tell us about yourself and Sweat Spa.
I few years ago I had my first infrared sauna experience and loved the feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation after the treatment so much, that I became completely addicted!
For the past two years, I have been working as a Clinic Manager for Hello Health (formerly Australian Nutrition Centre), a local health clinic with a focus on integrative pharmacy and functional medicine, resulting in a deep interest in self-care, health and wellness practices. Earlier this year, we moved to a bigger space in South Townsville and there was a spare room available to sub-let.
It was the perfect size to set up a sauna and relaxation room, and I thought how great it would be if our clients could experience those wonderful relaxation and health benefits all in the one place. I got the go-ahead from my boss, ordered a full spectrum infrared sauna and Sweat Spa was born!
I’ve set up a cosy space with complimentary towels, water, electrolytes, tea, reading material, brain games (think Rubik’s Cube) and makeup wipes for people to use, and there is a range of packages, including face and hair treatments on offer.

What has been the most challenging aspect of starting/owning Sweat Spa?
Keeping on top of social media! Managing content across the two platforms isn’t always smooth sailing, let alone trying to come up with content and be all over what’s trending. There’s so much conflicting advice out there too.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I’m a HUGE Kath & Kim fan. It’s always playing on my days off to fill a bit of time or while I’m doing housework. I can usually recite it word for word as I’m watching.

What is the best piece of career or business advice you have ever received?
Not so much advice but examples of great work ethic. My first job was for a small family-run business, just like my current employers at Hello Health. In both cases I’ve witnessed dedication, hard work and the importance of valuing the customer experience and doing the right thing, and I strive to live up to this standard in my own work.
Going forward, what is next on the cards for Sweat Spa?
I love my “day job” at Hello Health, so I’ll continue to grow Sweat Spa as a side-hustle for now but I do have a fun idea for a sauna “pop up” in the future – so watch this space!
