5 Minutes With… Zac and Katie Solari of Mary Who? Bookshop

5 Minutes With... Zac & Katie Solari - owners of Mary Who Bookshop. BDmag July 2024

After serving for almost 12 years in the RAAF, Zac and Katie Solari have chosen Townsville as the perfect place to settle down with their young family, and are excited to see what the future holds after taking over the reins of the CBD’s iconic Mary Who? Bookshop.

Tell us about yourselves and Mary Who? Bookshop.

After nearly 12 years in the RAAF, we were ready for a new chapter in our lives. We absolutely loved our careers in the Air Force, but we were searching for the perfect place and opportunity to settle down as a family. That’s when we found Mary Who? Bookshop, and it felt like everything just clicked into place.

Mary Who? isn’t just any bookshop – it’s a Townsville icon that’s been around for over four decades. Known for its impeccable customer service, quirky gifts, and an unrivaled selection of books, it’s a treasure in our community. The shop’s charm and the warm, welcoming atmosphere drew us in immediately.

For us, Mary Who? is more than a business – it’s a way to become part of the Townsville community. We love that the bookshop offers us a chance to get involved as a family and connect with people. Taking over Mary Who? feels like the perfect way to continue its legacy and make our own mark in this wonderful city.

What has been the most challenging aspect of owning Mary Who? Bookshop?

Being business owners is still so new for us, so honestly, it feels like EVERYTHING is challenging! But we couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible support from the previous owners, Sue and Kerry, our loyal customers, and our truly incredible staff member, Tenille (who is Mary Who? royalty, having been a part of the business for over 17 years).

Of course, there have been a few bumps along the way, especially getting orders to customers on time. It’s been a bit stressful, especially considering the fantastic reputation Sue and Kerry built before us. But as we get the hang of things, the hiccups are becoming fewer, and we’re feeling more and more confident in providing the reliable service our customers expect.

What is a fun fact about yourselves?

Zac: I’m a CrossFit fanatic and am passionate about health and fitness. I’ve been hooked on the sport for years and now coach at CrossFit 4810. I would love to run the gym if the chance ever comes our way.

Katie: I’m a true Townsville local. I was born and raised here and after traveling around Australia with the RAAF, I always knew I wanted to come back and settle down here. Townsville is my forever home, the perfect place to raise a family and enjoy the community I love.

What is the best piece of career or business advice you have ever received?

Ah, that’s a tough one! But if we had to pick just one piece of advice, it would probably be something along the lines of “Stay true to yourself”. It sounds simple, but when you’re diving into the world of business ownership, especially with a local gem like Mary Who? Bookshop, it’s easy to get swept up in all the advice and opinions flying our way.

Transitioning from our previous careers, to owning Mary Who? Bookshop, has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. We’ve learned that, while it’s important to listen to others and seek guidance, ultimately – you have to trust your instincts and stay authentic to what you believe in. After all, that’s what sets your business apart and keeps your passion burning bright.

There is a quote from, “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, that really speaks to this idea: “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” We feel it’s a reminder that when you stay true to your dreams and aspirations, the universe has a funny way of aligning things in your favour.

As we begin on this exciting journey as first-time business owners, we’re holding onto that advice and trusting in the magic of staying true to ourselves and our vision for Mary Who? Bookshop. Who knows what adventures lie ahead, but we’re ready to embrace them with open arms.

Going forward, what is next on the cards for Mary Who? Bookshop?

We are committed to continuing the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Sue and Kerry have lovingly built over the years. At the same time, we’re excited to infuse some fresh, Solari-Family vibes into the shop!

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:

Artistic Touch: We have some amazing artworks planned with a very talented local artist. Get ready to see our space transformed with her exciting creations.

Engaging Young Readers: We’re launching a Mary Who? Junior Bookclub and inviting kids from the Townsville community to participate in book reviews. We think it’s a fantastic opportunity for young readers to share their thoughts and discover new stories.

Coffee & Books: By popular demand, we’re in the early stages of planning a coffee break-meets-bookshop experience. Imagine enjoying a delightful cup of coffee while browsing through your favourite books.

Online Expansion: We’re also excited to announce that we’re in the early stages of setting up a website and online shop! Our goal is to make ordering easy and convenient for our customers and to reach a wider audience beyond our local community. Rest assured, though, nothing will change with the face-to-face, personable exchanges that currently exist in our shop. We’re dedicated to maintaining that warm and welcoming atmosphere that our customers know and love, whether they’re browsing online or visiting us in person.

We hope our customers are keen to join us in our upcoming adventures!
