5 Minutes With… Shannon Willcox

With a background in marketing, Shannon Willcox made the switch to Real Estate in January 2022, in the roles of Sales Agent at Northern Realty. She shares her passion for the industry, the ups and downs of the real estate market and her goals for the next twelve months and beyond.

Tell us about yourself and your career.

I am a dedicated Property Specialist who is genuinely excited to help people achieve their real estate dreams and property goals. I am a local North Queenslander who has extensive knowledge of the market and truly believes in the opportunities that the Townsville region provides. Working for Northern Realty, we are setting the standard in the North.

What has been the most challenging aspect of your role?

The rollercoaster! As an Agent who has been in the game for nine months now, one week I may have one new listing, the next I may have five. Managing extreme workload changes is something I am still navigating and I don’t know if I will ever ‘nail.’ However, I am beginning to embrace the quieter times and use this to work ‘on’ the business, instead of ‘in’ it.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I have a really good memory. The information that I can recall, whether it be phone numbers, random conversations or finite details even surprises me. It serves me very well in Real Estate, where I could be asked the ins and outs of any one of my properties at any given moment.

What is the best piece of career advice you ever received?

“Stand tall, chin up, shoulders back.” It’s something my Mum has always said to me, more so as I was a swimmer and so I was developing quite rounded shoulders. Now, it’s something I tell myself constantly, whether it be before a sales appraisal or after a horrible night’s sleep. It’s an immediate and literal, ‘pick me up’, that does not necessarily increase my confidence, but makes it appear as though I am. Try it for yourself!

Going forward, what is next on the cards for your career?

My first year in Real Estate has been about setting a pace. I didn’t want to set any goals, as without data or experience, I felt that was largely unfair. Come January 1st 2023, I will have a list of goals that I wish to meet, from sales records to review numbers to internal business structures and processes I wish to have in place. The aim is to continue to lay solid foundations in order for me to grow, no matter what the market is doing.

Your message.

I am always on the lookout to collaborate with likeminded individuals. I work with a range of fabulous Contractors, a florist who creates custom settlement gifts, but I am always looking for more people within my community to work with. If you had an idea on something you think we could work together on, (e.g. Social media competitions, networking events, sponsorships, etc.) please reach out! I would love to hear from you.
