Tell us about yourself and Dr Jo Lukins Pty Ltd.
A psychological Indiana Jones, I’m known for my work in understanding what drives individuals, teams, and organisations to reach their full potential. I best describe my work as helping motivated professionals develop high-performance thinking without the jargon. I take the complexities of the mental game and deliver understanding and actionable steps in a relatable way.
With over 30 years of experience and a PhD in Psychology, I have been grateful to work with elite athletes, the Australian Defence Force, and outstanding professionals in the corporate and educational sectors. Every day at work for me is different, but the theme remains the same – how can I assist people to get closer to their goals.
I have authored four books, and I truly enjoy the writing journey. It allows me to share my knowledge with a wider audience, and as a self-proclaimed bookworm, I love being part of the writing world.
Being awarded the Outstanding Alumni award in 2016 by James Cook University for my contributions to the field was a great honour. Working in a field that I love is incredibly rewarding I enjoy helping others overcome some of the hurdles (particularly the mental ones) to reach their own success.
I currently consult across the NRL Mens Game, to the Newcastle Knights (NRLW), within the Women’s National Basketball League, and to the Orchids (National Female Rugby League Team for Papua New Guinea).
I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and finds the most satisfaction in knowing that my work has had a positive impact.
What has been the most challenging aspect of owning Dr Jo Lukins Pty Ltd?
Early in my career, I embraced every opportunity that came my way. This openness was both challenging and rewarding, often pushing me well beyond my comfort zone. However, with the benefit of experience, I’ve learned to be more selective in my choices. I’ve discovered that the opportunities we pursue can be just as influenced by what we choose to decline. By saying no, we create space for the next exciting opportunity that may be just around the corner.
Initially, saying no can feel daunting—whether it stems from a desire to please others, concerns about our ego, or the assertiveness required to decline. Yet, once you master this skill, it becomes incredibly liberating. Embracing the power of both yes and no can lead to a more focused and fulfilling path.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
One of my character strengths is my love of learning. I believe it’s essential to embrace the vulnerability that comes with being a learner, as every expert was once a beginner! Currently, I’m immersed in drone photography, a passion of mine. I appreciate how this journey takes me into stunning environments and provides tangible results—beautiful artwork to display at home. Of course, it sometimes leads to a hasty retreat from an irritable bird, but that just adds to the adventure!

Going forward, what is next on the cards for Dr Jo Lukins Pty Ltd?
Travel has become a significant part of my work, allowing me to explore Australia while collaborating with new teams and organisations. I’m currently engaged with an organisation that hosts corporate retreats in the stunning Scenic Rim, which is an incredible experience. Additionally, I’m excited to begin working with a new sporting team at the end of 2024. On top of that, I have a new book project on the horizon—my fifth—which will involve collaborating with a fresh production team.
